When you think of Varanasi, several things immediately come to mind—ancient temples, the spiritual atmosphere of the Ganges, narrow lanes, vibrant markets, and of course, the legendary Banarasi Paan.

When you think of Varanasi, several things immediately come to mind—ancient temples, the spiritual atmosphere of the Ganges, narrow lanes, vibrant markets, and of course, the legendary Banarasi Paan.

During our recent visit to Varanasi, we decided to experience one of the city’s most famous paan spots—Gama Paan Bhandar in Godowlia.

And honestly, this small stop turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of our Varanasi food journey.

A Taste of Old Varanasi

Located in the bustling Godowlia area, Gama Paan Bhandar is known as one of the city’s old and popular paan shops.

Published reports have described the shop as being around several decades old, with its roots deeply connected to Varanasi’s traditional paan culture.

What makes places like Gama Paan Bhandar special is not just the paan itself, but the experience surrounding it.

The busy streets of Godowlia, the constant movement of people, the traditional shops, and the unmistakable atmosphere of Varanasi make every visit feel like a small part of the city’s history.

We Tried the Famous Sweet Paan

During our visit, we decided to try the sweet Banarasi paan.

The paan looked beautiful, fresh, and perfectly prepared.

As soon as we tasted it, the combination of sweetness and the traditional paan flavours instantly stood out.

And that’s when we realised something—a Varanasi trip feels incomplete without having a proper Banarasi paan.

After exploring the streets of the city, visiting its famous places, and enjoying its food, sitting down with a traditional sweet paan felt like the perfect finishing touch.

Why Is Banarasi Paan So Famous?

Paan has been an important part of the food and social culture of North India for generations. But Varanasi has given paan its own distinctive identity.

The traditional Banarasi paan is known for its presentation, flavours, and the unique way it is prepared. Different ingredients are carefully placed inside a betel leaf, folded beautifully, and served fresh.

For visitors, trying Banarasi paan is not simply about eating something—it is about experiencing a small but iconic part of Varanasi’s local culture.

Gama Paan Bhandar’s Place in Varanasi’s Food Culture

Gama Paan Bhandar has been mentioned among the well-known paan shops of the Godowlia area in published reports. The shop has also been associated with traditional paan varieties, including the famous gillauri-style paan.

More recently, Gama Paan Bhandar was included among prominent food establishments recognised as part of a Varanasi food initiative, highlighting the city’s famous local food businesses.

This growing recognition shows how traditional shops like these continue to remain an important part of Varanasi’s food identity.

Our Experience

For us, the best part was how simple the experience was.

We walked through the busy streets of Godowlia, stopped at Gama Paan Bhandar, ordered a sweet paan, and enjoyed it right in the middle of the lively atmosphere of Varanasi.

And honestly, the moment we had that paan, the fun of exploring Banaras felt double!

It was sweet, refreshing, traditional, and completely different from the usual food experiences we have while travelling.

Final Thoughts

Varanasi is a city that you don’t just visit—you experience it.

From the Ganga ghats to the narrow lanes, from traditional food to its famous paan, every corner has a story to tell.

And if you find yourself around Godowlia, stopping by Gama Paan Bhandar and trying a traditional sweet Banarasi paan can be a delicious way to experience one of the city’s most iconic flavours.

For us, it was definitely one of those small moments that made our Varanasi trip even more special. ❤️
